Called to Lead
Chief Brenda Commander grew up in northern Maine where the plight of the indigenous people was characterized by poverty, domestic violence, and taunted by racial discrimination. The future looked bleak but a series of circumstances provided opportunities and insight that called Brenda to seek to become the became the first woman chief of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians.
Filmmakers Pam Maus and Susanna Liller developed a professional friendship through their commitment to working with individuals and organizations to transform the lives of women and girls. Once they learned about the courage of Chief Commander, they knew her story of courage and faith had to be told. Called to Lead tells that story through documentary film.
